FIRECRACKER TOURNEY UNDER WAY

Fourteen teams are competing in KBC's annual Firecracker Tournament, which continues through Sunday at Lee Johnson Field and other local fields. Ten teams are competing in the 13/14-year-old division, including KBC's all-star teams. In the 14/15 division the KBC all-stars and the Kirkland Klouters, are competing with two Snohomish squads.

Round-robin play will determine which teams move on to play in Sunday's semifinal and final games. Please come out and support these terrific teams. And while you're here be sure to patronize the PK Cafe at Lee Johnson Field. You'll have a great meal, and you'll be helping KBC continue to provide quality baseball in Kirkland.

Finally, when you're in Kirkland Saturday be sure to stay for the city's fireworks show on the waterfront. You can view it from Marina Park or any number of vantage points along the lakefront. Expect heavy traffic in the downtown area Saturday.

HONORING A GREAT UMPIRE, FRIEND

KBC's 2009 City Championship tournament was dedicated to Tom Bishop, a longtime umpire and friend to baseball in Kirkland. Tom passed away in March. Above, the Bishop family, including his wife Sharon, and members of the Eastside Umpires Association gather at home plate to honor this wonderful man. We miss, you Tom.

CITY CHAMPIONS CROWNED

KBC's annual City Championships concluded Sunday with the following results:

PONY CASCADE: AWR was pushed to a final deciding game by a determined Shinstrom Norman team. AWR pulled away in the final game for a 21-12 win for the championship. Shinstrom had won the first game Sunday, 5-2, to force the final and deciding game of the double-elimination tournament.

PONY P-13: White Swan emerged the winner over the Steelhead, 15-5, in the final game for the championship. Teams in our Pony Cascade, Pony Olympic/P-13 and Colt divisions are competing.

COLT: As in the Pony Cascade division, a second final game was required to determine the winner of the double-elimination tournament. In the end the Kirkland Fire won the finale, defeating the Klouters after being pushed to the limit in a hard-fought tournament.

Congratulations to the winners and all the competing teams for a terrific tournament and a successful season. We look forward to seeing all of you next season.
